N is for Nebula Watercolor Paintings

NOne of my most favorite subjects to paint are nebulas. I love their color variety and shocking etheral quality. You never know what a nebula will look like–anything is possible. They bring my imagination to life and inspire me like nothing else.

I thought for “N” I’d share a couple nebulas I painted recently:

Nebula III in mixed mediaThe above nebula is done in mainly watercolor. Some of the stars are acrylic. The nebulas below are completely watercolor. The last one I’m toying with slicing into 2 smaller paintings.

Nebula IV in watercolorBoth are done on Yupo (hot pressed paper). I love using watercolor for these because I can’t control it. (If I want to be able to control the paint and mimic a particular nebula, I stick with acrylic.) Oh, I might be able to direct the paint a bit and choose the colors, but I never know what the end result will be. Just like an actual nebula. Nebula V in watercolor

    1. I love it for space stuff…but hate it for anything else, lol! I hate how the brush picks the paint right off. I feel like I have a giant eraser instead of bristles and I have to walk around pesky eggshells all the time. But it does keep me loose πŸ™‚
